Arrah and the Ferns

With a sound that's as infectious as their energetic, female singer, Arrah and the Ferns are one of Philly's best local pop bands. Lead singer Arrah seems to sometimes be channeling Karen O of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs but in way that's more of a fleeting homage than blatant, carbon copy. Be sure to check our their album All the Bad in One Place.

The War on Drugs

The War on Drugs is one of Philly's most successful local groups to date. Their sound is somewhat, ok, very reminescent of Bruce Springsteen but in a much more modern way. Local musician Kurt Vile was also once a part of this excellent group but left to do his solo project, eventually even landing one of his songs on the HBO show, East Bound and Down.

Camera Phone

While Camera Phone, aka Toby Altman, may not be a household name in Philly, his unique videos and sampling of top 40 tunes to create altogether other-wordly music is truly refreshing. Always innovating, Camera Phone's newest video for "Fat Usher" will leave you asking even more questions... in a good way.

Reading Rainbow

Reading Rainbow is most definitely the catchiest band in Philly at the moment. WIth a pop punk sound and driving rythyms, husband and wife duo Reading Rainbow have produced some of the most fun local music to date. Accessibility is one of aspect of local music that always seems to be lacking but not with Reading Rainbow. Be sure to buy their newest album, Prism Eyes- it's been enjoying heavy rotation around the HeyPhilly office.

Chipocrite

If you're a fan of old Sega and Nintendo games, then you will adore Chipocrite. One of Philly's most prominent chiptune artists, Chipocrite uses an actual Gameboy live on stage to control perform his music. Be sure to catch him at 8Static events every month .

Chiddy Bang

Former Drexel students,  Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege and Noah "Xaphoon Jones" Beresin, formed the rap group Chiddy Bang in late 2008 and have received international fame in the past few years. MC Chiddy also now hold the world record for the longest freestyle, clocking in at 9 hours, 18 minutes, and 22 seconds.

Sun Airway

Formerly known as The A-Sides, Sun Airway is comprised of locals Jon Barthmus and Patrick Marceill. Their sound is usually pretty heavy on the electronica but many tracks are fused with shades of indie/folk rock. These guys have pretty much made it out of Philly and are on to bigger and better things but we'll always reserve a spot for them in our locally grown hearts.
