Hershey, PA

Only a short drive down the turnpike, Hershey offers two great attractions in one location. Hershey Park and Chocolate World are terrific amusements for kids and adults alike (chocolate is a universal love of all ages!). You can make it a day trip or opt to stay in a lovely yet affordable hotel right near the parks. Bonus: the entire place smells like chocolate.

Dutch Country, Lancaster, PA

Think it’s a rough day when you forget your iPhone at home? Try living without electricity and other modern amenities. That’s how the Amish do it. Less than an hour from Philly, Lancaster County is a great destination for a relaxing look into the wonderfully simply lifestyle of these hardworking people. Dutch Wonderland and the Strasburg Railroad are nearby for the kids. Don’t feel like leaving when you get there? No problem. There are a ton of delightful little bed and breakfasts happy to accommodate you.

Chaddsford Winery, Chadds Ford, PA

Wine buffs and novices alike will find something to savor at the Chaddsford Winery. Tucked away in beautiful Chester County, this grape haven provides a relaxing retreat perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Camping Excursion

While Philadelphia is a large city certainly deserving of the term “urban jungle,” many from the area do not take advantage of the actual wilderness surrounding the metropolis. Many campgrounds are just a few quick miles from the center of Philly. If you’re low on dough and still looking to “get away from it all,” camping offers a cheap and fun way to escape the daily routine. Check out the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website for a list of great campgrounds near you.

Center City Hotel

If you can’t afford to fly for vacation, why not book a room downtown and treat yourself like a visitor to a new city? Live the life and treat yourself to all the amenities you would on a typical vacation, only without the expensive costs of transportation. While you’re at it, take in a show, have a fancy dinner and maybe jump on the subway to catch a Phils game. After all, you’re on vacation!
