BACK TO HOME
Since the economy is down and the heat is up, folks throughout the Delaware Valley are sacrificing some of their traditional summer activities in order to save some dough. While missing out on that annual shore week or rebellious road trip really does suck, not all is lost, fellow Philadelphians. There are plenty of things for you to do without breaking the bank.

EMBRACE THE BACKYARD

Nothing’s better than kicking it with good friends in your backyard, especially on a cool, breezy night. Grab a case of beer and some hot dogs, call up some buds and have an old-fashioned cookout. Tiki torches are optional, but highly, highly recommended.

CATCH A RIVER MONSTER

If you’re not the outdoorsy type, you’re probably not aware of the tremendous fishing locations around Philly. There are hundreds of creeks and streams, not to mention the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers, teeming with hungry bass, sunnies and catfish. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has a great resource guide for angling your way through Philly. Grab your fishin’ pole, dig up a worm and go hook a monster.

SCOPE OUT FREE CONCERTS

All summer long, Philly plays host to a cornucopia of free movie screenings and outdoor concerts, like the Screening Under the Stars movie night held every Thursday at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing.

PLAY A GAME

Obesity is a killer. Get out and enjoy the warm weather by playing a sport. You’ll be exercising and you won’t even realize you’re doing it because you’ll be having fun! Basketball, softball, soccer… They’re all tried and true. There are leagues throughout the city, like the Manayunk Sport and Social, that offer cheap, exciting and competitive play. Maybe go elementary school throw-back and play a little wall ball? Anything to separate you from your Xbox. See our "Top 10 Lawn Games" for more ideas here.

DRINK ON THE CHEAP

If you’re not one to guzzle brews in your backyard, perhaps because you can’t stand the neighbors or simply don’t have a yard, you can always find some slammin’ specials at your local bars. Heyphilly.com lists a whole load of Happy Hour and nightly drink specials at all your favorite Philly hangouts, like $2 Bud Lights at The Blockley and $3 Stellas at Eulogy.

EXPLORE THE CITY

While you may think you’ve experienced everything Philly has to offer, our guess is you haven’t. There are literally thousands of things to see/smell/touch/taste/hear within the city limits and at most they might cost ya a Septa token and a couple of bucks.

UH, GET A JOB

Get off your broke ass and look for some work. That’s certainly free and if all goes well, it will conclude with you being able to put some money in your pockets so you can actually afford your entertainment.
