BACK TO HOME

It hasn't happened yet, but before we know it, we'll be digging ourselves out of the snow and roaming the streets in search of some much-needed snow beers. Whether you're trudging through South Philly or delicately making your way into Center City, these spots will get you warm, cheerful and ready to spend future snow days (or "sick" days) happily napping on the couch.

Plough & The Stars
Situated in, uh, quaint Old City, Plough & The Stars features a rather large and scary fireplace for you to warm your bones and not fall into after a long day of shoveling snow and bullshit. Come in from 5-9pm on Sundays for a live jam sesh featuring Irish music. Ok, this is starting to seem better than my Sundays spent playing Call of Duty.

McGillin's Old Ale House
After walking block after block in the heart-stopping cold, the last thing I want to do is hang out all night on my feet in a crowded bar, fighting to get a drink. That’s where McGillin’s Olde Ale House comes in. You see, McGillin’s knows my feet don’t like to support my awkward body for more than two hours per night. So they have these things called tables that allow you and your friends to actually socialize--not just stare a female body parts all night.

Devil's Den
Aside from having seriously awesome and affordable hot dogs, Devil’s Den just recently lit their fireplace, making it an even better spot to congregate with fellow Satanists than it once was. Their beer menu is also perfectly suited for winter, with heavy beers and menu pairings that will make you forget your hellish walk home, at least for a while.

Monk's Cafe
Make a visit to Monk’s this winter for the sole reason of feeling like your smack dab in the middle of a Ingmar Berman flick. Is that Max Von Sydow next to me? Seriously, Monk’s Café probably the very best atmosphere for winter-I feel like I’m in the foothills of Germany, escaping some evil Count.

Pub & Kitchen
A popular mainstay in the G-Ho neighborhood, Pub & Kitchen is the perfect spot for warming up with tasty dishes (we wouldn't dare call it "pub food") and a cozy, almost regal-looking bar area. Also, their logo is a Pabbit (pig + rabbit) which means we automatically give them an A for Adorable.

Race Street Cafe
Given the near impossibility of hailing a cab in this area on a Saturday night, we were skeptical of the local joint until, well, last Saturday night. Ten minutes into it, we were loving the laid back vibe, the music (The Black Keys!) and the dimly-lit space, strategically brightened by a super cool gas street lamp. Add to this a wood-burning stove and you've got yourself the perfect spot to brave the winter months.

Ten Stone
Ask anyone living within five blocks of this neighborhood-y spot and they'll tell you: when it snows, we bundle up and walk to Ten Stone. Situated on the corner of 21st and South, the massive bar and sprawling table space make for an ideal spot to rub elbows with locals and warm up by the fire. A word of warning: it gets super-crowded, so it's best to head in as soon as you catch wind of the winter weather advisory.
