Philly's New Shake Shack
As if Philly needed another awesome place to fill one’s face, the popular, New York-based Shake Shack will coming to Philadelphia later this year. Known for their excellent burgers and fries (and shakes, obviously), Philly's Shake Shack will be located at 20th and Sansom, right around Village Whiskey and Helium Comedy Club. So take in some comedy and a classic American meal that is the burger-fries-shake combo.

The 76ers
And here we thought there wouldn't even be an NBA season, let a lone a promising 76ers debut. Yes, it looks as though the Sixers have been revitalized in more ways than one. They've recently gotten new management, axed their previous mascot "Hip Hop," and are slated to announce their new mascot sometime soon. Here's hoping we didn't just jinx the whole season.

The New Roots Mural
One of Philly's most successful bands to date, The Roots have been riding high after the release of their newest album, Undun. Currently enjoying international attention as Jimmy Fallon's house band, the group is currently working with the city on a “Roots Mural” planned to hit South Street later this year. Hey, anything to draw attention away from Condom Kingdom.

Philly's New Poet Laureate
While we’re not really what this means for 2012, we're generally excited that Philly has finally gotten some culture. Mayor Nutter recently named Sonia Sanchez Philadelphia's first Poet Laureate. Will there be impromptu poetry slams on Broad Street, a re-emergence of the open mic? Not knowing is half of the excitement!

Less Traffic (Hopefully)
It may not have made headline news, but Philadelphia is getting a boatload of money to improve traffic. While the funding is coming from different stimulus grants, we'll have around $20 million in total to blow up I76 and just start over. Ok, that's what I would do with the money; most of the funds will be sent improving traffic lights with new, tricked-out sensors and the like.

Eff the PPA Mobile App
Are you tired of constantly having to pay parking tickets? Is this cheesy infomercial voice getting to you? Us too! All joking aside, the Eff the PPA may be coming to an iPhone near you later this year. With all sorts of handy reminders and even a ticket referral system, where you can electronically submit your "not guilty" claims to an attorney, the app will help locals in their battle against the most persistent and annoying force in the Delaware Valley, the PPA. Well, not counting Steve Keeley, obviously.

Philly's New Online Suggestion Box
We may be getting a little too optimistic here, but Philly's new website, Change By Us: Philadelphia, is asking citizens to post their own comments and suggestions regarding everything from city streets to, er, parking on city streets. According to the site, the suggestions are going straight to the top, reaching Mayor Nutter and other leading administrators who can actually affect change. We’ll have to wait and see if it makes for a better Philadelphia this 2012.

More Great Local Comedy
No, this one isn't a cop out. Sure, you went to the Comedy Cabaret once with your in-laws, but it's a well-known fact that that particular establishment is actually where comedians go to die. In the past few years, Philly's comedy scene has been renewed with fresh blood to the point where there's an open mic worthy of your precious free time almost every night. If you want our recommendation, check out Thursdays at the Raven Lounge. It's free and more importantly, it's funny.
